Cruise the River Severn
Britain’s longest and mightiest river flows from mid-Wales to the Bristol Channel. We explore the 35 miles from Stourport to Gloucester.
The Severn is mainland Britain’s longest and mightiest river. It rises on the wild mountains of Mid-Wales before tumbling down onto the Midland plain and flowing past quaint country towns and fine cathedral cities on its way to the Bristol Channel.
In boating circles the Severn has never quite achieved Premier League status, seldom spoken of in the same breath as the Avon, Thames or Nene, yet there’s plenty to love about it. Navigable for 42 miles, the wide, lightly locked route flows through quiet countryside between Stourport and Gloucester (the part we’re covering here), taking in numerous charming towns, villages and refreshment points along the way.
